i am the stuffing
"You're complicated and complex, yet all your pieces fit together. People miss you if you're gone - but they're not sure why."

what part of thanksgiving are you
?

and if you somehow slept through all of the hoopla surrounding jones soda's notorious "holiday pack", you can read the reviews of some brave taste-testers here.

mouse hunting
you can meet eligible singles online, buy your groceries online, make a virtual bootleg run for some high-grade canadian pharmaceuticals online, so why not be able to hunt wild pigs online? an outfit in (where else) texas is trying to start up a remote hunting service, where anyone with an internet connection and more money than sense can log on to power up a .22-caliber rifle. apparently the only thing standing in his way (besides a few raised eyebrows at the parks and wildlife dept) is his lack of bandwidth: "[the crackpot] will offer animal hunting as soon as he gets a fast Internet connection to his remote ranch that will enable hunters to aim the rifle quickly at passing animals". because aiming slowly spoils all the fun.

nerds with too much time on their hands
• an entire English dictionary where each definition is a limerick. for instance:
acrylic acid, n.
If it's varnish or lacquer you brew,
Or you're cooking up some sort of glue,
You'll need all kinds of goop
In your chemical soup -
That includes C3H4O2.

• a (15-minute long!) farenheit 9/11 spoof based on the Lord of the Rings

(hurray for nerds!)

fastcompany looks into future, finds frosting
from pourable frosting to flat-structured ad agencies (creatives talking to clients?! what's the world coming to?) to vending-machine french fries and "sense branding", fastcompany takes a look forward at what trends and oddball ideas we can expect to be affected by in 2005. turns out that guy on TV who looks like a gray quentin tarantino is onto something after all.

wisdom from the 18th century
clearly, i wish things had turned out a little differently yesterday, but i've found comfort in the strangest of places: the 1700s. thomas jefferson's letter to john taylor urging patience with their situation of being ruled by a party that they don't feel represented by brings me some measure of peace. here's an excerpt:

"A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to it's true principles. It is true that in the mean time we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a war & long oppressions of enormous public debt . . . If the game runs sometimes against us at home we must have patience till luck turns, & then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the principles we have lost, for this is a game where principles are the stake."

and to quote John Kerry - in the tone of a request and not an overused saying: God, (please) bless America.
thanks to sarah tune for the fwd

ponch and john save halloween
sometimes, life imitates art. and sometimes, life imitates CHiPs.

something in this article about a lady in massachusetts who lost her engagement ring while handing out halloween candy rang a bell with me. then i remembered: October 21, 1978. i was 5 (and - depending on whether you believe her - kristin wasn't even born yet), but i still somehow remember CHiPs episode #206: "Trick or Trick". Ponch and John are dealing with a series of candy muggings - some crazed woman keeps stealing trick-or-treat bags from little kids. turns out she had lost her engagement ring while handing out candy and was desperate to get it back. i won't spoil the ending of the CHiPs episode for you, but the lady in massachusetts was reunited with her ring in the end. i just love a good coincidence.
