how sweet it is
wine: i love it, i drink it, i don't understand it. shamefully, i don't know the difference between a malbec and a zinfandel (though i've never let that stand in my way). FINALLY someone is talking to me on my level: Wine X Magazine has teamed up with Jelly Belly to deconstruct wines to their base flavors. want to re-create a classic california merlot? pop one each of the following flavors: french vanilla + buttered toast + chocolate pudding + cherry + plum + raspberry + strawberry + dr. pepper. and to make it a french merlot, add 1 dirt-flavored bean (available through jelly belly's harry potter-inspired "bernie botts" line) (and i'm not picking on the french, it's in the instructions!). there are bean kits available on the web site, or you can hit your local candy shop to pick up your own. F-U-N!

backstroke of the west
a hilarious account of one man's forray into the world of bootleg DVDs. (though not my husband's forray, which got us a $5 copy of Friday Night Lights shot with a handheld camera from the side of the theater). this is - prepare to be confused - about a bootleg of Revenge of the Sith, dubbed in chinese and subtitled back into English. badly. how badly, you ask? the translated title is The Backstroke of the West. read on

singles night recall
looks like singles night has gone the way of booze and good taste at the roanoke walmart. any of you still looking for love can buy your own red ribbon and stand by the front doors like the guy in the article. and good luck.

more pink poker??!
promotions involving "pink" and "poker" are apparently all the rage these days. i was just served an ad for brutal fruit's "pink poker party", which encouraged me to host a ladies-only poker night (and, i suppose, serve brutal fruit's beverages), where the jackpot is a "women-only adult novelty product". so how is it that the juice company is being dirtier with their pink poker than the lingerie company?

pickup on aisle 5
has match.com let you down? your college roomate run out of losers to set you up with? why not try "singles night" at your local wal-mart? where could such a concept be created (and succeed)? where else: roanoke. now, now, put your pitchforks down - i am a 'noke girl born and raised - but you've just got to laugh at the thought of tying a red ribbon to your shopping cart and cruising the aisles in search of love.
(thanks, meredith!)
pink panty poker
**scandal!!** pink panty poker has disappeared! the url simply refreshes over to the victoria's secret site. did i simply dream up the 5 young hotties, or is there a pink panty consipiracy afoot? i'll update when i get to the bottom of it all.
cp+b is at it again. first came subserviant chicken, now they're bringing you pink panty poker, this time for victoria's secret. you're dealt a hand of poker with 5 hot young things (co-ed), and the loser has to take off an item of clothing. up to you whether you, um, play along at the office. spoiler alert: Chris Blue Eyes counts his belt as one of his 3 allowed items (they don't get totally buck, duh).

moment of silence
gov warner is holding a rally (albeit, a really quite one) at capitol square tomorrow to show support for britain in the wake of last week's terrorist bombings.
VIRGINIA TO SHOW SOLIDARITY AND SUPPORT FOR BRITAIN
On Thursday, July 14 at 11:45 a.m., Governor Warner and First Lady Collis invite Richmond business leaders, employees, and citizens to join them at the Capitol Square Bell Tower to show the Commonwealth’s support for Britain on the week anniversary of the London terrorist bombings.
The global outpouring of support Virginia and the entire United States received after the 9/11 attacks will never be forgotten. As one of the three states directly impacted on 9/11, it is meaningful for Virginians to show support for Britain. British Prime Minister Tony Blair has called for a moment of silence on Thursday in Britain at noon their time.
Governor Warner will make brief comments, followed by the tolling of the bells at noon in recognition of those who lost their lives in the bombings. State agencies have been encouraged to observe two minutes of silence at noon and businesses wishing to join in that sentiment are welcome.
Citizens and business leaders in and around Richmond are encouraged to take part in this show of support for Britain. Please pass this message along to employees, family members, and others who may be interested in attending. The event is open to the public and scheduled rain or shine.
We look forward to seeing you on Thursday at 11:45 a.m. at the Bell Tower.
(thanks, betsy!)

blog search
was having dinner the other night with my ridiculously entrepreneurial-minded brother-in-law, who proposed the idea of a search engine that does nothing but search blogs. so what did i run across today? technorati. over beers on wednesday, ours was named "bloogle" (all credit to my husband there), but the idea is the same: enter a search term and technorati will return all blogged instances of it. one possible cool application of such a technology could be for a company (bigger than freeRad, obv) to get a man-on-the-street idea of their buzz level. cool. wish i'd thought of it first.

twilight zone
i just published what i was certain would be the winning blog entry of the day, only to find that kristin and i had blogged the exact same news item - and had both referenced jaclyn smith! wanted: office space where we aren't so close to each other that we share the same thoughts. crazy.
McDiddy
this report breaks the bizarre news that mcdonald's is shopping for a big-name designer to update the uniforms of their 300,000 american employees (including a "leaner, sportier look" for big ronald himself, who in my opinion really only needs to be ridded of his frumpy mom-hair). in the running: p. diddy's sean john label, tommy hilfiger, phat farm, and armani. no mention yet of kathy ireland or jaclyn smith, but it would only make sense.
